Investigation of the Relationship Between Bigorexia Tendency, Self-Esteem and Life Satisfaction in Adult Men Participating in Sports

Abstract

Purpose: In recent years, bigorexia tendencies have been increasing among young men with the interest in bodybuilding. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between bigorexia tendency and self-esteem and life satisfaction in adult men who do sports. Material and Methods: Participants were men, aged 18 years and older, who were involved in sports. Muscle Dysmorphia Inventory was used to evaluate bigorexia tendencies, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale was used for self-esteem, and the Satisfaction with Life Scale was used for life satisfaction. Results: A total of 130 men with a mean age of 28.28±8.05 years participated in the study. Significant positive (r=0.198, p=0.024) and negative (r=0.354, p=0.000) relationships were found between bigorexia tendency and self-esteem and life satisfaction, respectively. Conclusion: The study emphasizes the important effects of bigorexia tendencies on self-esteem and life satisfaction. It is recommended that rehabilitation specialists adopt a multidisciplinary approach and focus on occupational balance, healthy nutrition and positive body image. By increasing awareness and education, individuals' well-being and life satisfaction may be improved.

Spor Yapan Yetişkin Erkeklerde Bigoreksiya Eğilimi ile Benlik Saygısı ve Yaşam Doyumu Arasındaki İlişkinin İncelenmesi

Abstract

Amaç: Son yıllarda genç erkekler arasında vücut geliştirme sporuna olan ilgiyle birlikte bigoreksiya eğilimleri artmaktadır. Bu çalışmanın amacı, spor yapan yetişkin erkeklerde bigoreksiya eğilimi ile benlik saygısı ve yaşam doyumu arasındaki ilişkiyi incelemektir. Gereç ve Yöntem: Katılımcılar, 18 yaş ve üstü spor yapan erkeklerden oluşmaktadır. Bigoreksiya eğilimlerini değerlendirmek için Kas Algısı Bozukluğu Envanteri, benlik saygısı için Rosenberg Benlik Saygısı Ölçeği, yaşam doyumu için Yaşam Doyumu Ölçeği kullanılmıştır. Sonuçlar: Çalışmaya yaş ortalaması 28,28±8,05 yıl olan 130 erkek katılmıştır. Bigoreksiya eğilimi ile benlik saygısı arasında pozitif (r=0,198, p=0,024), yaşam doyumu ile negatif (r=0,354, p=0,000) yönde anlamlı ilişkiler bulunmuştur. Tartışma: Çalışma, bigoreksiya eğilimlerinin benlik saygısı ve yaşam doyumu üzerindeki önemli etkilerini vurgulamaktadır. Rehabilitasyon uzmanlarının multidisipliner bir yaklaşım benimseyerek, aktivite dengesi, sağlıklı beslenme ve pozitif beden imajı üzerine odaklanmaları önerilmektedir. Farkındalık ve eğitim artırılarak bireylerin iyilik hali ve yaşam doyumu iyileştirilebilir.
