Occupational Therapists' Use of Technology in the Professional Field: Their Views, Experiences and Perceptions: A Qualitative Study

Abstract

Purpose: The concepts of health and technology have been intertwined since the 15th century, and occupational therapists benefit from certain sources and applications of technology in rehabilitation processes. The purpose of this study is to examine the opinions, experiences and perceptions of occupational therapists regarding the use of technology in their professional field. Material and methods: The study is a qualitative research and the phenomenological design was adopted in the research. Purposive sampling was employed to identify the participants, and the study ultimately included 41 occupational therapists who had experience of working with virtual reality, telerehabilitation or assistive devices.Data were collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews and open-ended survey questions, with the interviews conducted via online platforms and lasting 30-45 minutes on average.The data were analysed using the content analysis method, and themes and sub-themes were determined. Results: The technology applications that occupational therapists have the most experience and knowledge to use are assistive technology, virtual reality and telerehabilitation, while the application they see as the most accessible is telerehabilitation and the application they see as the most useful is virtual reality. Conclusion: While technological applications make treatment processes more effective and accessible, their use remains limited by certain technical and financial challenges. In the future, the role of technology in occupational therapy interventions is expected to grow, and continued research in this area is crucial.

Ergoterapistlerin Mesleki Alanda Teknoloji Kullanımı: Görüşleri, Deneyimleri ve Algıları: Nitel Bir Çalışma

Abstract

Amaç: Sağlık ve teknoloji kavramları 15.yy.dan beri iç içedir. Ergoterapistler rehabilitasyon süreçlerinde teknolojinin belirli kaynak ve uygulamalarından faydalanmaktadırlar. Bu çalışmanın amacı ergoterapistlerin mesleki alandaki teknoloji kullanımına dair görüş, deneyim ve algılarının incelenmesidir. Gereç ve Yöntem: Çalışma nitel araştırma olarak fenomenolojik desende yürütüldü. Katılımcılar, amaçlı örnekleme yöntemi ile belirlenmiş olup, çalışma kapsamında sanal gerçeklik, telerehabilitasyon veya yardımcı cihazlarla doğrudan çalışmış ve bu teknolojileri deneyimlemiş 41 ergoterapist yer aldı. Veriler, yarı yapılandırılmış derinlemesine görüşmeler ve açık uçlu anket soruları aracılığıyla toplandı. Görüşmeler çevrimiçi platformlar üzerinden gerçekleştirildi ve ortalama 30-45 dakika sürdü. Verilerin analizi, içerik analizi yöntemi ile gerçekleştirilmiş olup, temalar ve alt temalar belirlendi. Sonuçlar: Ergoterapistlerin en çok kullanma tecrübesine ve bilgiye sahip oldukları teknoloji uygulamaları sırasıyla yardımcı teknoloji, sanal gerçeklik ve telerehabilitasyon iken en ulaşılabilir olarak gördükleri uygulama telerehabilitasyon, en faydalı gördükleri uygulama ise sanal gerçekliktir. Tartışma: Teknoloji uygulamaları, tedavi süreçlerini daha etkili ve erişilebilir hale getirirken, bu uygulamaların kullanımı bazı teknik ve mali zorluklarla sınırlı kalmaktadır. Gelecekte, teknolojinin ergoterapi müdahalelerinde rolünün daha da artması beklenmekte ve bu alandaki araştırmaların devam etmesi önem arz etmektedir.
