Abstract

According to the cognitive approach, how individuals will be affected by a traumatic event and their mental health are related to their cognitions. From this point of view, it can be said that cognitions play an important role in the post-earthquake mental health problems of adolescents who have experienced an earthquake and in the chronicisation of these problems. The main purpose of this study is to develop a valid and reliable measurement tool to assess the post-earthquake cognitions of adolescents who have experienced an earthquake. The study was conducted with the participation of 854 high school students (Male = 337, 39.5%; Female = 517, 60.5%) who experienced an earthquake. Expert opinion, exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, criterion validity, convergent validity, and discriminant validity analyses were conducted for validity assessments of the scale. As a result of all validity measurements, it was determined that the scale met all validity criteria. For reliability measurements, composite reliability values, internal consistency coefficients, and test-retest correlations were analyzed. It was seen that the scale met the reliability criteria of all reliability measurements. Based on all these, it was determined that the 16-item, 4-dimensional Post-Earthquake Cognitions Scale for Adolescents is valid and reliable for high school students.
