THE ERRORS MADE BY PRIMARY SCHOOL FOURTH GRADERS ON FRACTIONS
Abstract
|
Teaching of mathematical concepts underlies teaching mathematics. Fractions are among the hardest concepts that elementary school students encounter. Due to conceptual richness and complexity of fractions, teaching them in mathematics lessons requires attention and care. It is essential to explore the errors concerning fractions in order to be careful and attentive in teaching of fractions. To this end, this study aims to determine the errors that the fourth-grade students in elementary school make in the subject of fractions. In this study, document analysis as a qualitative research method is used. The working group of the study is composed of notebooks and study papers of 143 fourth-grade students, and a control list prepared by researchers is used in data analysis. According to the results of the study, the most common errors that students make in fractions are as follows: Operating as if fractions were natural numbers when sorting in fractions, adding the numerator and denominator in the same fraction and writing it as a natural number in the addition process, subtracting the small number from large number considering the numerator and denominator separately in subtraction, and not separating the whole into equal parts in numerical axis. |
