SECONDARY SCHOOL TEACHERS’ LEVEL OF EXPOSURE TO CYBER BULLYING AND THEIR COPING STRATEGIES FOR IT
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate secondary school teachers’ level of exposure to cyber bullying and their coping strategies for it. The survey method was used as the basic method in this study, and the mixed method was utilized in the analysis of the data. A total of 22 teachers who work in official secondary schools in Kecioren, a town in Ankara, in 2016-2017 academic year comprised the sampling of the present study. An interview form prepared by the researcher was used during the data collection phase. Descriptive analysis and content analysis were carried out to analyze the interview data. The results of the study revealed that that 95% of the teachers were directly exposed to cyber bullying, and 87% of them had witnessed such an event. The teachers suffering from bullying have been subjected to insults, the sharing of personal information and pictures without permission, sexual harassment and the seizure of their accounts. In addition, these teachers face anger, sadness, low self-esteem, fear and restlessness. For this reason, all of the teachers are taking various measures against cyber bullying, and they give some suggestions regarding it.
