Thrips Species Associated with Rosa canina L. and Cistus laurifolius L. in Kütahya, Türkiye
Abstract
Thysanoptera is a biologically diverse insect order that includes many economically important pest thrips species. Recent studies have shown that some thrips species are not only agricultural pests but may also play important roles as pollinators. Due to the limited number of studies on thrips species associated with natural vegetation in Türkiye, this study investigated the thrips species associated with Rosa canina L. and Cistus laurifolius L. in the Çatak Wildlife Development Area located in Tavşanlı district of Kütahya Province. During field studies, thrips specimens were collected by beating flowers onto a white tray, preserved in AGA solution, and identified through microscopic examinations after slide preparation. As a result of the study, three species belonging to the family Thripidae were identified: Thrips dubius Priesner, 1927, Thrips major Uzel, 1895, and Thrips meridionalis (Priesner, 1926). Among the 55 collected specimens, T. meridionalis was the most abundant species, representing 70.91% of the total specimens. All identified species are recorded for the first time from Kütahya Province. Thrips major was collected only from R. canina, whereas T. dubius was found only on C. laurifolius, while T. meridionalis was obtained from both plant species. The findings indicate that protected natural areas are important for the conservation of thrips diversity and the sustainability of natural ecological processes.
