Afrikalı Amerikalı Erkekliğinin Yeniden Tanımlanması: Ta-Nehisi Coates’un Dünya ile Benim Aramda Adlı Eserinde Irk, Kimlik ve Direniş

Year 2025, Issue: 22, 126 - 138, 31.05.2025

Abstract

Redefining African American Masculinity: Race, Identity, and Resistance in Ta-Nehisi Coates’ Between the World and Me

Year 2025, Issue: 22, 126 - 138, 31.05.2025
https://doi.org/10.29157/etusbed.1559135

Abstract

Ta-Nehisi Coates’s Between the World and Me (2015), a series of letters to his son released in the wake of the Black Lives Matter movement, provides a nuanced and multifaceted portrayal of black male experiences intricately linked to the fabric of contemporary American society. This study will explore Coates’s articulation and representation of black masculinity, investigating how he navigates his identity as a marginalized outsider and a significant voice within the United States. Specifically, it will analyze Coates’s introspection on his masculinity and fatherhood, his layered depiction of black manhood, and his challenge to dominant, white supremacist norms of masculinity. By examining Coates’s portrayals of masculinity and fatherhood, this study aims to highlight pathways toward constructing more inclusive and healthier models of masculinity for African American men. Coates’s reflections on his adolescence, his representations of black youth in Baltimore, and his perspectives on fatherhood—especially his own paternal role and the impact of his parents on his masculine identity—are central to shaping a more affirmative vision of black masculinity.
