Examination of the Relationship Between Patience and Caring Behaviors in Surgical Nurses: A Descriptive Study

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the relationship between patience and caring behaviors in surgical nurses. A descriptive cross-sectional research. This study was conducted between June 2023 and December 2023 with 164 nurses working in surgical clinics of a university hospital. Data were collected using the Introductory Characteristics Form, Caring Behaviors Inventory-24, and Patience Scale in Nurses. Prepared in accordance with the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology. In this study, the sub-dimensions related to knowledge and skills among surgical nurses and gender have influenced each other. It was found that surgical nurses aged 30-39 obtained higher mean scores of the assurance subscale and patience for work processes. It was determined that surgical nurses working 40 hours and below, with an age of 30-39 years and a duration of experience of 6-10 years in the institution obtained higher mean scores from the patience for inadequacy subscale. Surgical nurses with balanced workload were found to have higher mean scores in the patience for patients and their relatives and patience for inadequacy subscales. While determinants such as gender and age affect care behavior, work conditions and experience mostly affect patience. In the study, the relationship between patience and caring behaviors in surgical nurses was found to be very small and not significant.
