Ad biliminin özel alanının inceleme alanlarından birini Kişi Adları Bilimi (Anthroponymy)
oluşturmaktadır. Kişi adları bilimi içine ad, göbek adı, soyadı, takma adlar ve sanlar
gibi ad türleri girmektedir. Kişi Adları Bilimi bütün toplumlarda kendi içinde bir gelenek
oluşturmuştur. Her milletin kendine has bir ad verme sistemi vardır.
etkisini yitirir. Dede Korkut Hikayeleri’nde çoğunluğu Türkçe olan adlar, İslamiyetin kabulü
ile yerini Arapça ve Farsça adlara bırakır. Peygamberler, İslam büyükleri ve evliyalarının
adları ve dinî kavramları içeren soyut adlar önem kazanır. Türk adlandırmalarında her zaman
Anthroponomy is one of the special units of naming science. The naming science includes
proper names, middle names, surnames, nicknames and titles. Naming science has a
tradition in every community. Every nation has a particular tradition for giving names to
children. As for naming traditions and ceremonies, they can vary even in different parts of
a county. According to the ancient Turkish traditions, a person needed to deserve his/her
names in order to be given a name. However, this tradition was diminished in time. Although
most of names were in Turkish in Dada Gorgut stories, these names were replaced by
Arabic or Persian names after Turks’ accepting Islam. Names of prophets, blessed men in
Islam and names of saints as well as abstract names which refer to religious meanings have
been attached importance. A Turkish tradition which has never changed with regards to giving
name is that the name of religiously and historically important people, name of heroes,
statesmen, authors and artists as well as the names related with the day and month in which
the child is born and the names of the deceased members of families are given to children.
How children were were given names in the past, and how are they given names today in the
Turkish community? What is the reason of the changes which have emerged in time? What
is the relationship between the names of today and those in the past? Reflecting the tradition
of Gaziantep region with regards to giving names to children, which carries the Turkish
tradition for giving names to children, we will give detailed information about naming in
Turkish tradition.
