ÖZGÜRLÜK VE KADIN ÖZNELLİĞİ: ASTELL, WOLLSTONECRAFT VE TRISTAN ÜZERİNDEN BİR KURAMSAL YAKLAŞIM

Abstract

Bu çalışma, Mary Astell, Mary Wollstonecraft ve Flora Tristan’ın özgürlük anlayışlarını feminist kuram çerçevesinde karşılaştırmalı ve bütüncül bir yaklaşımla yeniden ele almayı amaçlamaktadır. Farklı tarihsel ve entelektüel bağlamlardan gelen bu üç düşünür, özgürlüğü yalnızca siyasal bir hak olarak değil, kadın öznelliğini şekillendiren ahlaki ve epistemik bir süreç olarak kavramsallaştırmışlardır. Bu çerçevede özgürlük; Astell’de rasyonel kapasitenin gelişimi, Wollstonecraft’ta keyfi tahakküme karşı direnç ve yurttaşlık talebi, Tristan’da ise sınıf ve cinsiyet temelli eşitsizliklerin aşılması yoluyla toplumsal adaletin tesisi şeklinde somutlaşır. Çalışma, bu özgürlük anlayışlarının kesişim noktalarını ortaya koyarak, erken modern dönemde kadınların felsefi düşünceye yaptığı katkıları feminist kuram perspektifinden değerlendirmektedir. Böylece, söz konusu düşünürlerin eserlerinde özgürlüğün çok boyutlu, bağlamsal ve ilişkisel bir kavram olarak nasıl yeniden inşa edildiği gösterilmekte; feminist düşüncenin tarihsel sürekliliği açısından özgün bir tartışma zemini sunulmaktadır.

CONCEPTUALIZING FREEDOM AND FEMALE SUBJECTIVITY: A THEORETICAL ENGAGEMENT WITH ASTELL, WOLLSTONECRAFT, AND TRISTAN

Abstract

This article aims to revisit the conceptions of freedom developed by Mary Astell, Mary Wollstonecraft, and Flora Tristan through a comparative and integrated feminist theoretical framework. Although rooted in distinct historical and intellectual traditions, all three thinkers conceptualize freedom not only as a political right but as a moral and epistemic process shaping female subjectivity. In this context, freedom manifests as the cultivation of rational capacity in Astell, resistance to arbitrary domination and the demand for citizenship in Wollstonecraft, and the pursuit of social justice through the elimination of class- and gender-based inequalities in Tristan. By highlighting the convergences among these different perspectives, the study evaluates early modern women’s contributions to philosophical thought within the broader context of feminist theory. Ultimately, the article demonstrates how freedom is redefined in their works as a multidimensional, contextual, and relational concept, offering an original ground for reflecting on the historical continuity of feminist thought.
