ACCORDING TO WILLIAM JAMES PRAGMATIC BASES OF FAITH

Abstract

According to William James God gives strength to man in the midst of helplessness. God is an ally of man in his conditions that require strenuous efforts. The alliance assures the continuity of achievements for man. Otherwise, man can easily fall prey to despairing about the consequence of his efforts. Obviously, belief in God enables man to comprehend to the worth of his existence. James speaks of the need to believe for man in his the most intimate moments. He believes in God because he feels the need for him. Without religious beliefs, our lives are collapsed in a radical manner. Because, religious belief satisfy the needs take precedence for human being. In our deeper moments we sense that of ourselves we are subject to death and we are powerless to accomplish successfully our most cherished quests. In conclusion, James affirms the deeper truth that man is subject to disappointment and nothingness without God. The practical benefit of faith provides necessary and sufficient foundation to believe in God.

WILLIAM JAMES`İN DÜŞÜNCESİNDE İMANIN PRAGMATİK TEMELLERİ

Abstract

William James`e göre, Tanrı çaresizlik içindeki insana dayanma gücü verir. Tanrı, üstün gayret gerektiren işlerde insanın müttefikidir. Bu ittifak, insan için başarıların sürekliliğini garanti eder. Aksi takdirde, insan gayretlerinin neticesine ilişkin olarak kolaylıkla umutsuzluğa düşer. Açıkça, Tanrı`ya iman etmek, insana kendi varoluşunun değerini idrak etmesini sağlar. James, en mahrem anlarda, insan için inanma ihtiyacından bahseder. O, muhtaç olduğunu hissettiği için Tanrı`ya iman eder. Dinî inançlar olmaksızın, hayat temelinden çöker. Zira, dinî inançlar insan için öncelikli ihtiyaçları karşılar. Öyle anlar olmaktadır ki biz ölüme mahkûm olduğumuzu ve saygıya layık arayışlarımızı başarılı bir biçimde gerçekleştirmeye gücümüzün yetmediğini hissederiz. Sonuç olarak, James Tanrı olmaksızın, insanın hayal kırıklığı ve hiçlikle karşı karşıya olduğunu iddia eder. İmanın pratik faydası, Tanrı`ya inanmak için gerekli ve yeterli temeli sağlar.
