THE EVOLUTİON OF PLATO’S POLİTİCAL THOUGHT

Abstract

Plato expresses his basic thoughts about politics in his dialogues called The Republic, Statesman and Laws. In his other works, while his views on politics were mostly handled alongside his views on other fields, these three works convey the thought of politics in great detail. In The Republic, the first of his trilogy, Plato depicted the ideal state in his dream and stated that this state could only be realized under the rule of a (philosopher) king.. After writing the state work, Plato, who went to Sicily to the palace of King Dionysos in the hope of realizing the theory of the philosopher king he put forward in this work, has also attempted to put his theories into practice in both Dionysos I and Dionysos II, which replaced him. However, both these attempts resulted in frustration for him. These two attempts undermined his belief in the realization of the philosopher-king type, which gave him a very unlikely occurrence in his work called The Republic. So much so that in the second work of the trilogy, in the Statesman, Plato first stated that the state under the rule of philosopher-king was the best state. The last piece of law, on the other hand, is a constitution book that states that the law is now dominant and that everything about the state is determined by law. This article is also intended to outline the philosophy of Plato’s political thought, evolving from the rule of the philosopher-king to the rule of law.
