ELİ HİRSCH’İN ÖZDEŞLİK GÖRÜŞÜ: TÜRLER, SÜREKLİLİK VE SAĞDUYU

Öz

Tür kavramlarının doğası, bu kavramların nesnelere uygulanma kuralları ve nesnelerin zaman içinde varlıklarını sürdürerek özdeşliklerini koruma biçimleri önemli bir felsefi sorun oluşturmaktadır. Eli Hirsch bu sorunu, özdeşlikle ilgili metafizik tartışmaların sıklıkla dışarıda bıraktığı sağduyu ve gündelik dil pratiklerini de göz önüne alarak ele alır. Hirsch’e göre bir nesnenin özdeşliği, büyük ölçüde hangi tür altında kavrandığıyla ilişkilidir. Hirsch’in özdeşlik ve tür kavramlarıyla ilgili geliştirdiği kuramının en önemli yönü, özellikle sıkı ve kurucu özdeşlik arasında yaptığı ayrımdır. Bu doğrultuda, bu çalışma onun Leibniz Yasası'nın katı yorumlarından kaynaklanan ikilemleri aşmak için tutarlı bir yaklaşım geliştirdiğini göstermeyi amaçlamaktadır. Ayrıca bu çalışmada Hirsch'in tür kuralının yetersizliklerine ilişkin görüşü ve devamlılık ilkesinin bu eksiklikleri nasıl giderdiği açıklanacaktır. Hirsch'in kuramının, bir nesnenin izlediği yolun, sağduyu ile tutarlı bir şekilde ve varolanları yersiz bir şekilde çoğaltmadan, bir tür kavramı altında zaman içinde izlenmesine olanak tanıdığı savunulacaktır.

ELİ HİRSCH'S THEORY OF IDENTİTY: SORTALS, CONTİNUİTY, AND COMMON SENSE

Abstract

The nature of sortal concepts, the rules for the application of these concepts to objects, and the manner in which objects maintain their identity by persisting through time, pose a significant philosophical problem. Eli Hirsch addresses this issue by taking into account common sense and everyday language practices, aspects often excluded from metaphysical debates on identity. According to Hirsch, an object’s identity is largely determined by the sortal concept under which it is understood. The most significant aspect of his theory on identity and sortal concepts is the distinction he draws between strict identity and constitutive identity. Accordingly, this study aims to show that he develops a coherent approach to overcome the dilemmas arising from strict interpretations of Leibniz’s Law. Furthermore, this study will explain Hirsch’s view on the inadequacies of the sortal rule and how the principle of prolongation addresses these shortcomings. It will be argued that his theory allows for an object's path to be traced through time under a sortal concept, in a manner consistent with common sense and without an undue multiplication of entities.
