THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MEANING AND INTERPRETATION IN AUGUSTINE’S DE DOCTRINA CHRISTIANA THROUGH THE DISTINCTION OF SIGNUM AND RES

Abstract

This study examines Augustine’s distinction between signum (sign) and res (thing) in his work De Doctrina Christiana, within the context of language, meaning, and biblical interpretation. According to Augustine, the entire process of acquiring knowledge is related to signs, since the human mind usually approaches things not directly but through signs. At this point, Augustine divides signs into natural and conventional ones; among these, conventional signs—especially words—play a central role in understanding the multilayered nature of the Holy Scriptures. However, for Augustine, interpretation is not merely a linguistic analysis but also a spiritual orientation. The ultimate purpose of signs is to direct the reader toward God, the supreme res. In this sense, Augustine’s understanding of language carries not only epistemological but also moral and theological dimensions. The movement from signum to res signifies not only an intellectual process but also a spiritual transformation. Thus, Augustine’s hermeneutics integrates meaning with the principle of caritas, combining knowledge with love and moral maturity. This article aims to demonstrate that Augustine’s theory of signs is not simply a theory of language but also a guiding, transformative, and existential framework for humanity’s relationship with God.

DE DOCTRINA CHRISTIANA’DA AUGUSTINUS’UN SIGNUM VE RES AYRIMI ÜZERİNDEN ANLAM VE YORUM İLİŞKİSİ

Abstract

Bu çalışma, Augustinus’un De Doctrina Christiana adlı eserinde geliştirdiği signum (işaret) ve res (şey)ayrımını, dil felsefesi, anlam kuramı ve Kutsal Kitap yorumu bağlamında incelemektedir. Augustinus’a göre bütün bilgi edinme süreci işaretlerle ilişkilidir, çünkü insan zihni şeylere çoğunlukla doğrudan değil, işaretler aracılığıyla ulaşır. Bu noktada Augustinus, işaretleri doğal ve geleneksel olarak ikiye ayırır; özellikle geleneksel işaretler, yani kelimeler, Kutsal Kitap’ın çok katmanlı yapısını anlamada temel bir role sahiptir. Ancak onun için yorum yalnızca dilsel çözümleme değil, aynı zamanda manevi bir yönelimdir. Zira işaretlerin nihai amacı, okuyucuyu Tanrı’ya, yani en yüksek res’e yöneltmektir. Bu bağlamda Augustinus’un dil anlayışı yalnızca epistemolojik değil, aynı zamanda ahlaki ve teolojik bir boyut taşır. İşaretlerden res’e ilerleyen süreç, zihinsel bir çözümlemenin yanı sıra ruhsal bir dönüşümün de ifadesidir. Dolayısıyla Augustinus’un hermenötiği, anlamı yalnızca kavramsal düzeyde değil, caritas ilkesi çerçevesinde sevgi ve ahlaki olgunlukla bütünleştirir. Bu makale, Augustinus’un işaret teorisinin sadece bir dil kuramı olmadığını; aynı zamanda insanın Tanrı’yla ilişkisinde yönlendirici, dönüştürücü ve varoluşsal bir değer taşıdığını göstermeyi amaçlamaktadır.
