THE RHYTHM OF EDUCATION: PRINCIPLES OF MEANINGFUL LEARNING IN ALFRED NORTH WHITEHEAD'S PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION

Abstract

This study examines Alfred North Whitehead's understanding of the rhythm of education, developed within the context of his philosophy of education, and discusses Whitehead's arguments for meaningful and lasting learning. Whitehead's understanding of education was shaped by his process philosophy, and he viewed education not as a body of knowledge but as a constantly evolving and changing process. Whitehead, who acknowledged that true knowledge is knowledge relevant to life, argued that education should incorporate living knowledge rather than inert knowledge unconnected to life. Therefore, he criticized classical and rote-based approaches to education. Living knowledge, however, is acquired through the rhythmic structure of education, a cyclical process comprised of romantic, precise, and generalizing phases. Thus, Whitehead posits that learning occurs within a natural flow, and that this flow is compatible with the student's developmental stages and the nature of the mind.

EĞİTİMİN RİTMİ: ALFRED NORTH WHITEHEAD’İN EĞİTİM FELSEFESİNDE ANLAMLI ÖĞRENMENİN İLKELERİ

Abstract

Bu çalışmada Alfred North Whitehead’in eğitim felsefesi bağlamında geliştirdiği eğitimin ritmi anlayışı ele alınmış ve buradan hareketle Whitehead’in anlamlı ve kalıcı öğrenmeye yönelik ortaya koyduğu argümanlar tartışılmıştır. Whitehead’in eğitim anlayışı onun süreç felsefesi ile şekillenmiştir ve o, eğitimi bir bilgi yığını olarak değil; sürekli gelişen, değişen bir süreç olarak değerlendirmiştir. Gerçek bilginin yaşamla ilişkili bilgi olduğunu kabul eden Whitehead, yaşamla bağı bulunmayan atıl bilgiler yerine eğitimde canlı bilgilerin bulunması gerektiğini ileri sürmüş bu nedenle ezbere dayalı klasik eğitim anlayışlarını eleştirmiştir. Canlı bilgiler ise romantik evre, kesinlik ve genelleme evrelerinden meydana gelen ve döngüsel bir süreç olan eğitimin ritmik yapısı ile elde edilmektedir. Böylece Whitehead öğrenmenin doğal bir akış içinde gerçekleştiğini, bu akışın öğrencinin gelişim evreleriyle ve zihnin doğası ile uyumlu olduğunu öngörmüştür.
