Has History Ended?

Abstract

There have always been philosophers and thinkers of history defending the view that there is a goal or end, progress and order in history. According to these thinkers, if history did not go to a particular end or goal, some rational research on history would be out of the question. For this reason, history does not progress randomly or by chance; it has an end or goal to arrive at. Among these thinkers , according to the most famous one, namely, Hegel, the ultimate end or goal of history is freedom and indeed this sounds off on the idea of the end of the history. Fukuyama, relying on Hegel to justify his thoughts regarding history, puts forward also that history is in progress for an end or goal and when it is arrived at this end or goal, it will be come to the end of history. In his view, this final point in history to be arrived at is a liberal democracy. Accordingly, this study aims at dealing with Hegel and Fukuyama’s “endist ideas of history” so as to illuminate in what sense they have argued and debated on the end of history

Öz

Tarihte belli bir amaç, ilerleme ve düzen olduğunu savunan tarih felsefecileri ve düşünürler olmuştur. Bu düşünürlere göre, tarih belirli bir amaca doğru gitmeseydi tarih hakkında rasyonel araştırma yapmak anlamsız olurdu. Şu halde, tarih gelişigüzel ve rastlantısal olarak ilerlemez; onun ulaşmak istediği bir amaç vardır. Bu düşünürlerin en önemlilerinden olan, Hegel’e göre tarihin son amacı özgürlüktür ve bu tarihin sonu düşüncesinin de dile getirilişidir aslında. Tarihe ilişkin görüşlerini Hegel’e dayandıran Fukuyama da tarihin bir amaca doğru ilerlediğini ve bu amaca ulaşıldığında da tarihin sonuna gelineceğini öne sürer. Ona göre tarihte gelinebilecek bu son nokta liberal demokrasidir. İşte bu çalışmanın amacı, Hegel ve Fukuyama’nın “soncu tarih görüşleri”ni ele alıp; bu düşünürlerin hangi anlamda tarihin sonunun geldiğinden ya da bittiğinden söz ettiklerini açığa kavuşturmaya çalışmaktır
