The Big Self-Esteem Erosions that Humanity has Suffered So Far and may Yet to Suffer

Abstract

Humanity has suffered several self-esteem damaging shocks and disappointments so far. Among these are our realization, after the Copernican revolution, that the planet we live on is not located at the center of the universe, as we had thought, but at a seemingly uninteresting and insignificant corner of it; and our discovery that we humans are really animals still undergoing a process of evolution. We have experienced relatively smalle-scale shocks too, such as when we found out that the much extolled human intelligence and certain much revered human emotions and behaviors are caused by certain biochemical mechanisms governed by natural laws. It is possible that other shocks to our self image are yet to come. The most devastating among them may turn out to be one that may be inflicted on us by a visit of super-intelligent beings from an extraterrestrial civilization

Öz

İnsanlık bu güne kadar bazı öz-güven kırıcı şoklar ve hayal kırıklıkları yaşadı. Bunlar arasında, Kopernik devrimi sonrasında, yaşadığımız gezegenin sandığımız gibi evrenin merkezinde değil, herhangi bir ilginçlik ya da önem taşımayan sıradan bir yerinde olduğunu anlamamız ve Darwin sonrasında da, evrim geçirmekte olan bir hayvan olduğumuzu öğrenmemiz vardır. Arada başka nispeten “ufak çaplı” şoklar da yaşadık: aklımızın ve yücelttiğimiz bazı duygu ve davranışlarımızın doğa yasalarıyla yönetilen birtakım biyokimyasal mekanizmalara dayandığının ortaya çıkması gibi. İnsanlığı bekleyen başka şoklar da belki de kapıdadır. Bunlar arasında en yıkıcı olanı, dünyamızı ziyaret edecek çok gelişmiş bir uygarlığa mensup dünya-dışı süper-zeki varlıklardan kaynaklanabilir
