A Critical Look at the Perception of Rousseau in Turkey: Was Atatürk Influenced by Rousseau?
Abstract
That Atatürk was influenced by Rousseau is widely believed in Turkey. Atatürk’s speech at the National Assembly in 1921 is often given as primary evidence for this influence. But Atatürk’s remarks on Rousseau in this speech are actually critical. When these remarks are placed in the framework of the whole speech, it can be seen that the aforementioned view is not very accurate. On the other hand, an alternative explanation of these remarks that Atatürk must have confused Rousseau with Montesquieu is far from being satisfactory. This article aims to provide a more satisfactory account for Atatürk’s remarks by questioning the view that Rousseau opposed the separation of powers
