Philosophical Autobiographies: The Styles of Construction of the Self in F. Nietzsche’s Ecce Homo and J. P. Sartre’s The Words

Abstract

This study is mainly concerned with the styles of expression that construct the self and the self’s incomplete status demonstrated through aesthetic experience in Nietzsche’s Ecce Homo and Sartre’s The Words. The method of this study is to deal with these autobiographical texts with regard to the compatibility between these philosophers’ styles of self-construction and their philosophical positions. The direction to follow in order to elaborate on the styles of construction of the textual self is towards discovering the way these texts determine the autobiographical styles with respect to the collaboration of their content and structural dynamics. Nietzsche interprets his own subjectivity under Existentialist maxims in his autoportrait by seeing his self not as a given substance but an undetermined being, and consequently by trying to create it himself. And since existence precedes essence in Sartre’s philosophy, it is impossible to speak of a human being as a fixed and complete entity. Freedom and the responsibility for existence compel Nietzsche and Sartre to outgrow their frames while they are creating their selves. In this context, the forms these philosophers employ in setting parallelisms between the existential self and the textual self must be exposed. FELSEFÎ OTOBİYOGRAFİLER: F. NIETZSCHE’NİN ECCE HOMO’SU VE J. P. SARTRE’IN SÖZCÜKLER’İNDE ‘BEN’İN İNŞASININ TARZLARI

Öz

Nietzsche’nin Ecce Homo ve Sartre’ın Sözcükler adlı otobiyografilerinin ‘ben’i hangi ifade tarzları ile yapılandırdığı ve bu tarzların ‘ben’in tamamlanmaktan kaçma halini estetik deneyim düzeyinde hangi ölçüde dışavurduğu bu çalışmanın konusudur. Bu filozofların otobiyografilerini filozofların kendi benliklerini inşa etme tarzlarının felsefelerine uyumu dâhilinde ele alarak irdelemek çalışmanın yöntemini oluşturacaktır. Metinsel benliğin yapılanış tarzlarını irdelemede izlenecek doğrultu hem metin içeriklerinin hem de metinlerin yapısal dinamiklerinin işbirliği içerisinde otobiyografik üslubu nasıl belirlediklerini anlamak yönünde olacaktır. Nietzsche kendi otoportresinde ‘ben’ini verili bir töz değil de belirlenmemiş bir oluş olarak görüp onu yaratmaya çalışmakla kendi öznelliğini varoluşçu bir tarzda yorumlamaktadır. Sartre’ın felsefesinde ise varoluş özü öncelediği için insandan donmuş ve oluşup bitmiş bir varlık gibi söz etmek mümkün değildir. Özgürlük ve varoluş sorumluluğu Nietzsche ve Sartre’ı kendini yaratırken aşmaya itmektedir. Bu bağlamda, bu filozofların otobiyografilerinde varoluşsal benlik ile metinsel benlik arasındaki koşutluğun sağlanma biçimleri ortaya konmalıdır. Kendini var etme çabası olarak otobiyografik deneyim otopoietik bir edimdir
