Modal Music and the Aesthetic of Kant
Abstract
Kant’s considerations on aesthetics significantly influenced his successors. It seems possible to argue that his ideas are not only important in a historical context, but also substantial for our time because they have an explanatory power even today. In this regard, to discuss the specific topics in the context of Kant’s aesthetics may be enlightening as well as examining the general issues of asthetics. One of them is modal music, because both the properties and the aesthetic character of it can be considerably understood through Kant’s suggestions on beautiful. In this essay, Kant’s considerations on aesthetics will be treated in its outlines and his arguments on the beautiful will be analyzed. Then, the modal music will be discussed. Finally, we will try to justify how can the aesthetics of Kant helps us to describe the aesthetic properties of modal music
