On The Possibility of Forgiveness in Vladimir Jankélévitch
Abstract
This study aims to reveal an outline of Vladimir Jankélévitch’s idea of forgiveness. Accordingly, by dealing with the metaphysical foundations of forgiveness, Jankélévitch’s reflections on “first philosophy” will be scrutinized. Since Jankélévitch thinks that true forgiveness can only be understood through pseudo-forgivenesses; these will be discussed and will be tried to explain why they cannot be regarded as true forgiveness, followed by a discussion on the possibility of pure forgiveness. The final section includes Derrida’s critiques on Jankélévitch and an assessment of his commentaries as concluding remarks.
