NEW SOCIETY AND MASS CONSUMPTION The transformation of consumption in the beginning of the 20th century and the discursive structure and mecanism of the consumption emerged as an ideological means of socialization

Abstract

Since the beginning of the 20th century, consumption has become for the masses a means to acquire an identity through the symbolical meanings of the consumption goods. The evolution towards consumerism in which the consumption has been transformed into the means of a new symbolic language cannot be merely explained within the dominant theoretical consensus of science. Consumption can be seen as a new method of socialization that the individual uses to obtain social inclusion. Although the scientific consensus may consider this new method as a means of ratification of a pseudo natural conflict state which menaces the social unity, in reality the mass consumption produced by the consumerist means of socialization is the real reason behind the destruction and the contradiction. The contradiction between the discourse and the reality of consumerism constitutes the departure point for the immanent critic. The consumerism which has become an ideological socialization method is a contradictory structure and its role in the new society is to surmount the social conflicts concentrated in the beginning of the 20th century through pacification of the masses in consumption

YENİ TOPLUM VE KİTLESEL TÜKETİM Tüketimin 20. yüzyıl başında yaşadığı tarihsel dönüşüm ve yeni bir ideolojik toplumsallaşma aygıtı olarak ortaya çıkan tüketimin söylemsel yapısı ve çalışma mekanizması

Abstract

20. yüzyılın başından itibaren tüketim, kitlelerin kendilerine tüketim ürünlerinin taşıdıkları sembolik anlamlar yoluyla kimlik edinme aracı olarak kullandıkları bir ideolojik aygıt halini aldı. Tüketimin yeni bir sembolik dilin aracısı olarak ortaya çıktığı tüketiciliğe consumerism doğru bu evrimi, iktidarla uyumlu olmak zorunda olan hâkim paradigmanın etkisi altındaki bilimin teorik konsensüsü içerisinde açıklamaya çalışmak yetersiz kalacaktır. Sorunun, iktisadi alanı da belirleyen rasyonalizmle iç içe bulunması, tüketim toplumunun ortaya çıkışının rasyonalizmin içsel bir eleştirisi yoluyla anlaşılmasını gerektirmektedir. Tüketim, bireyin kendini topluluğa bağlamak için kullandığı yeni bir toplumsallaşma aracı olarak görülebilir. Her ne kadar bilimsel konsensüs bu yeni metodu insanın doğasından gelen ve toplumsal bütünlüğü tahrip etme potansiyeli olan çatışmalı durumun teskin edilmesine yarayan bir çeşit yöntem olarak ele alsa da, gerçekte tüketim araçları yoluyla toplumsal sınıfların kimliklerini edindiği yapının neden olduğu yoğun kitlesel tüketim, yıkımın ve çelişkinin asıl kaynağı olarak karşımıza çıkar. Tüketimin söylemi ile gerçekliği arasındaki bu çelişki, içsel eleştiri için bir çıkış noktası teşkil etmektedir. Yeni bir ideolojik toplumsallaşma aygıtı olarak tüketim çelişik bir yapıdır ve yeni toplumda asıl rolü 20. yüzyılın başında yoğunlaşan toplumsal çatışmaların, kitlelerin pasifleştirilmesi yoluyla aşılmasıdır.
