ROUSSEAU AND PHILOSOPHICAL AUTOBIOGRAPHY
Abstract
Philosophical autobiographies written by the philosophers themselves provide for the historians of philosophy invaluable and fruitful opportunities to shed light on the relation between the philosopher’s thought and the lived experience. However due to the fact that philosophical autobiography is a relatively new genre, studies on this field are quite limited. In this respect, as one of the pioneers of the genre, Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s works are especially noteworthy for the researchers. Yet, precisely because his works reflect the paradoxes of the philosopher, they present certain difficulties for the scholars and historians. This paper argues that these paradoxes, in fact, hints at the ways in which the philosopher intends his works to be interpreted. Relying on a specific memory that is recounted in Rousseau’s Confessions, the paper proceeds to discuss how this memory lays out an important framework to explore the question of philosophical autobiography in the context of the interplay between the lived experience and the thought of the philosopher.
