The Concept of Katharsis in Aristotle

Year 2006, Issue: 2, 63 - 70, 01.09.2006

Abstract

The concept of katharsis is one of the rare philosophical concepts which has preserved its meaning since Greek philosphy until our time. It was used by Plato as a methodological concept of his epistemological aim, the attainment of the knowledge of ideas. In contrast to this, Aristotle formulated it as the condition of art, and therewith of producing. He also has the aim to attain its knowledge, but in this case it is the method of artistic creation, beginning by the provocation of emotions and leading to ethical correctness. Katharsis begins by the emotions of pleasure and pity which tragedy and its tragic moment presents and proceeds to culminate on a higher intellectual level. The purified one, the one (the spectator) who reviews his/her personality anew, no longer possesses the previous personality, but the intellectual superiority of creating a new value. Can this superiority effect a nuerological change in the brain by creating emotional contradictions? This and similar questions have brought the concept of katharsis to be used not singly as a basic concept of the philosophy of art, but also as a basic concept of nuero-philosophy, a branch of knowledge flourishing today.

ARİSTOTELES’TE KATHARSİS KAVRAMI

Year 2006, Issue: 2, 63 - 70, 01.09.2006
