Hermeneutic might be seen as a method of interpretation of texts or a method of knowledge which is build on the notion of understanding or a general teory of understanding. On the other hand, specially in Schleiermacher and Dilthey’s philosophy, hermeneutic was seen as an answer to philosophy’s quest of method for itself. By the time, hermeneutic is turned to an alternative for epistemology and the solution of its problems by cancelling them in contemporary philosophy. If hermeneutic is a solution for epistemological problems, what is its ontological basis? This study aims to make a critical investigation of the tradition of hermeneutic, specially Vico’s and Dilthey’s thought, in the context of its ontology by Hegel’s dictum that the truth is the whole
