The Kantian Roots of The Arendtian Political Judgment

Year 2012, Issue: 14, 27 - 42, 01.09.2012

Abstract

The two known sources of political judgment in Hannah Arendt, a prominent thinker of the 20th century, are Aristotle’s concept of phronêsis and Immanuel Kant’s notion of judgment of taste. When Arendt delineates her political philosophy and her understanding of political judgment in particular, she repeatedly refers to the Kantian judgment of taste and its notions such as enlarged mentality and sensus communis. These two notions of the Kantian aesthetics are of great value for Arendt since she desires to describe a political judgment free from universals. This paper examines the link between Arendt and the Kantian transcendental philosophy through these two notions. While analyzing this link, the fundamental question to be answered is this: Does Arendt detranscendentalize the mentioned elements of the Kantian transcendental aesthetics for the sake of her own understanding of political judgment?

ARENDTÇİ POLİTİK YARGININ KANTÇI KÖKLERİ

Year 2012, Issue: 14, 27 - 42, 01.09.2012

Abstract

20. yüzyıl düşünce tarihinin önemli isimlerinden olan Hannah Arendt’in politik yargı düşüncesinin bilinen iki kaynağı Antik çağ filozofu Aristotales’in phronêsis kavramı ve Aydınlanma dönemi filozofu Immanuel Kant’ın beğeni yargısıdır.
