Height-Diameter allometry of Calabrian pine within Anamur, Southern Türkiye

Abstract

The height (H)-diameter at breast height (D) models are crucial for various forest-related endeavors, including the assessment of forest biomass, stand productivity, carbon dynamics, and volumes of wood-derived forest products. The present study aimed to identify the most suitable H-D model for red pine stands (Pinus brutia Ten.) in the Anamur region of the Mersin province. To achieve this, 263 H-D pairs were collected from these stands. Subsequently, three different H-D model forms were evaluated using various error metrics to assess their performance. The results showed that the models exhibited fair performance in terms of root mean square percentage error (RMSE%), with RMSE% ranging from 20 to 30%. Furthermore, it was observed that an increase in the number of model parameters led to more accurate tree height predictions. However, this improvement in modeling accuracy was relatively insignificant. Consequently, the current study proposes the development of more efficient H-D models by incorporating stand properties such as basal area per hectare and site index. These models are designed to effectively capture the variation observed in the H-D pairs.
