Investigation of the Color of Wood Impregnated with Tall Oil During 10 Years of Exposure to Natural Weather

Abstract

The rate at which wood surfaces deteriorate can be influenced by weathering time and exposure circumstances. Investigating the impact of extended weathering exposure times on wood qualities is beneficial since they are more dependable for end-use performance assessments. The aim of this study is to investigate the surface color of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) wood samples impregnated with tall oil after 10 years of outdoor weathering testing under Bartın conditions. Color measurements of the samples were taken at 6, 12, and 120 months. The results showed that while ∆L (-45.31), ∆a (-2.98), and ∆b (-15.33) values were determined in the control sample, it was found that the ∆L (-22.37) value was lower in the samples treated with Tall oil, while the ∆a (-8.06) and ∆b (-23.57) values showed higher changes. This indicates that the Tall oil application causes a more pronounced change in surface color, especially along the red-green and yellow-blue axes.
