Abstract

Advanced societies take it seriously to introduce their pioneers of science and art to their current and future generations. By doing that, they try to encourage the future generations and to fill in the places of those pioneers after they pass away. One of the Turkish pioneers of that sort, who lived in the last era of the Ottoman Empire and the first era of the Turkish Republic was İsmâil Sâib Sencer, who was one of the Beyazıt Mosque’s scholars (dersiâmm) and one of the professors at Dârulfunûn (Ottoman University), as well as an administrator of the Beyazıt Public Library. He was called as “a library with two feet” due to his knowledge concerning Arabic language and literature, Islamic sciences and especially because of his knowledge in bibliography. Although Kevserî was six years younger than Sencer, they were close friends. In this article, Kevserî, talks about İsmail Sâib Sencer in a sincere way giving rise to two historical anecdotes that are related to him.

İlmin Kaybı: Allâme İsmâil Sâib Sencer

Abstract

İleri toplumlar, ilim ve sanatta öne çıkmış fertlerini mevcut ve sonraki nesillere tanıtmaya büyük önem atfederler. Böylece yeni yetişmekte olan nesilleri teşvik ederek, o örnek şahsiyetlerin ölümlerinden sonra, onların yerlerini doldurmaya gayret ederler. Bizim Osmanlı’nın son, Cumhuriyet’in ilk dönemlerinde yaşamış olan büyük şahsiyetlerimizden biri, Beyazıt Câmii dersiâmlarından, Dârülfünûn müderrislerinden ve Beyazıt Devlet Kütüphanesi müdürlerinden İsmâil Sâib Sencer’dir. Arap dili ve edebiyâtı, İslâmî ilimler ve özellikle de kitâbiyât alanındaki engin bilgisinden dolayı kendisine “ayaklı kütüphane” denmiştir. İşte Kevserî, bu makalesinde kendisinden altı yaş büyük olan, ama arkadaş çevresinde bulunduğu İsmâil Sâib Sencer’i kısaca tanıttıktan sonra, onunla ilgili iki hâtırasını tarihe not düşüyor.
