POLITICAL INSTABILITY AND TOURISM RELATIONSHIP IN THE CONTEXT OF MEDIA
Abstract
The image of a country with a tourism potential; when it is evaluated in two parts as tourism image and social and political image or general image, it is a fact that both must be in harmony with each other. This means that international relations can affect the tourism industry easily and quickly because of high elasticity of tourism demand. Thus the variability in tourism revenues creates direct and indirect effects on national income through price, employment and foreign trade channels. In this study, it was tried to determine the effects of the news about Turkey in the Guardian Newspaper in the period of 2003-2015 on the Turkish tourism sector within the framework of the concept of political instability. According to the results obtained, the number of tourism revenues and number of tourists belonging to that year decreased in line with the number of negative news in the periods when the international tension was intense until 2010. The correlation link between two variables has weakened after 2010 in terms of the reaction to the news that came out that year. However, when the 2009 recession was excluded from the analysis; the number of tourists increased by 11,6 million against 735 negative political news in the period of 2003-2008; the number of tourists increased by 8,1 million against 1.299 negative political news in the period of 2010-2015. In addition, foreigners in Turkey are mostly associated with criminal cases in the subject news content. In this context, since the medra has the function of repraduoing the facts as well as showling, it can be said that the media has the potential to influence the tourism sector and the perceptions.
