THE EFFECT OF 6 WEEKS JIVAMUKTI YOGA ON SELECTED PHYSIOLOGICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL PARAMETERS IN YOGA BEGINNERS

Abstract

The effects of six weeks jivamukti yoga practice on selected physical and psychological parameters in yoga beginners was investigated in this study. Twenty-four (22 women and 2 men) healthy adults age ranged 20-57 (Mean 37) participated the study. Subjects attended to session 60-min once weekly for six weeks. Physiological assessments included heart rate, systolic-diastolic blood pressure and trunk flexibility. Totally four physiological assessments were done. Two of assessments were taken in pre and post of first yoga session. Rests two of them were taken pre and post of last yoga session. In order to determine changes in psychological outcomes (anxiety, depression, positive well-being, self control, general health and vitality) General Well-Being Schedule (GWB) was executed, prior to first yoga session and at the end of last yoga session. According to results, when first pre-yoga and sixth week pre-yoga compared, Jivamukti Yoga have no effect on resting heart rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressure (p>0.05) however, when first pre-yoga and sixth week pre-yoga trunk flexion compared, significant differences was found in trunk flexion (p<0.05). Additionally, significant improvements were found in anxiety, depression and self control (p<0.05).
