THE HEALING EFFECTS OF FAMILIARIZATION TRIAL ON REAL ASSESMENTS IN BIODEX STABILITY SYSTEM

Abstract

It is recommended that to perform familiarization trial before the real assesments of dynamic balance in Biodex Stability system. It is expected that to get better score in real assesments because subjects understand the device, assesment procedure etc. in that familiarization trials. Although it is recommended in the literature that to perform familiarization trial before real assesments, there was no study which compared the familiarization trial and real assesment scores. When the time is in question, familiarization trials may disregard by researchers because to perform familiarization trial increase the assesment time in twofold. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether there is differences between familiarization trial and real assesment scores. Hereby, it would be tested the healing effect of familiarization trial on real assements in Biodex Stability System. 30 males and 17 females, totally 47 subjects participated the study. All of the subjects was sedahtery and have no medical complication. Subjects' mean age was (21.78 ± 1.38) years, mean height was (1.7 ± .08) meter, mean weight was (67.17 ± 13.62) kilograms, mean BMI score was (23.08 ± 3.78) kg/rrf. Dynamic balance was assesed at resistance level 2. Subjects were asked to perform 2 familiarization trial for 20 second (Familiarization trial 1 and 2). Subjects were rested for 60 second between the familiarization trial 1 and 2. 60 second after the familiarization trials subjects were performed the real assesments (real assesment 1 and real assesment 2). Subjects were again rested for 60 second between the real assesment 1 and 2. At the end of the study, overall stability index (OSI), anterior-posterior stability index (APSI) and medial-lateral stability index (MLSI) scores were compared. One subject were assessed totally 4 times. The average of first and second trial score (familiarization trials) and the average of the third and fourth trial (real assesments) were compared. Statistically significant differences were founded in (Overall stability index [t(46)= 6.45, p<.05, n*= .79], anterior-posterior stability index [l(46)= 3.58, p<.05, rf= .26], and medial-lateral stability index [t(46)= 2.75, p<.05, rf= . 15]) When familiarization trial scores and the real assessment scores were compared in male, there is no significant differences was found in medial-lateral stability index [t(29)= 0.95, p = .35], on the other hand significant differences were found both in anterior-posterior stability index scores [t(29)= 2.71, p=.01] and overall stability index scores ]t(29)=3.69, p=.001j. When familiarization trial scores and the real assessment scores were compared in female group, there were significant differences were found in all stability index scores (overall, anterior posterior, mediolateral; [t(16)=6.98, p=.00], [t(16)=2.28, p=.03], [t(16)=4.5, p=.00], respectively). In the light of this research, to perform familiarization trials before real assesments can improve the real assesments score's of both males and females significantly.
