Abstract

Daily life activities and habits are changing with the developing technology. Therefore, sedentary lifestyle and posture disorders are becoming more and more common. Pilates is an effective exercise approach to protect and improve spinal health. The aim of this study was to review the literature examining the effect of Pilates exercises on spinal posture disorders. The study was conducted by systematic review of the relevant literature according to the general screening model. The findings of the study were obtained by searching the keywords ''Pilates, posture, kyphosis, lordosis, scoliosis, and forward head posture'' in PubMed, Web of Science, and Science Direct databases for English studies published in the last five years as of May 2023. Ten articles that met the selection criteria were included in the study. In the majority of the articles reviewed, it was concluded that Pilates exercises improved postural alignment, reduced pain and increased balance, flexibility, mobility, muscle strength and endurance. As a result, Pilates exercises were found to be an effective method that can be used to improve spinal postural alignment and to treat postural disorders.
