Science and Technology Literacy and Informal Science Education Potential Role of Newspapers

Abstract

The aim of this study is to explore the potential role of the newspapers on scientific literacy for citizenship. The methodology is based on a content analysis which is one of the qualitative research methods. For this purposes five newspapers were chosen on the basis of their national outreach. The chosen newspapers were examined covered the period of one month. The analysis of the newspapers were restricted with the firs three pages. In addition, the first pages of the news papers were analysed depending on their contents The analysis showed that the news of science and technology generally emphasis the side effect of them on the environment. They are not giving enough information about the nature of science and science process skills.

Fen Teknoloji Okuryazarlığı ve İnformal Fen Eğitimi Gazetelerin Potansiyel Rolü

Abstract

Bu çalışmanın amacı, vatandaşların fen okur yazarlığı üzerine gazetelerin potansiyel etkisini araştırmaktır. Bu çalışmada kullanılan metot, kalitatif araştırma metotlarından birisi olan içerik analizine dayanmaktadır. Bu amaçla, ulusal basından en çok tiraja sahip olan beş gazete seçilmiştir. Seçilen gazeteler bir ay süreyle takip edilerek incelenmiştir. Gazetelerin analizi ilk üç sayfaları ile sınırlandırılmıştır. Ayrıca gazetelerin ilk sayfaları içeriklerine göre bağlı olarak da analiz edilmiştir. Analizlere göre, gazetelerde fen ve teknoloji ile ilgili haberler daha çok fen ve teknolojinin çevreye olan yan etkileri üzerine vurgu yapmaktadırlar. Bu haberler bilimin doğası ve bilimsel süreç becerileri hakkında yeterli bilgi vermemektedir.
