Abstract
Turkey has almost 40% of the total marble reserves (13.9 billion tonnes) of the world with 5.2 billion tonnes. However, only 1% of these reserves are currently being utilized. The marble production of Turkey has shown a gradual increase starting from 1980s. Turkey ranks 7th in marble production and 8th in marble export in the world. There are 563 marble production facilities, 116 of which are in governmental. 447 of them are in private sector. Among 5968 people employed in these facilities, 1021 work in governmental and 4947 work in the private sector. In 2002 there were 3,105,000 tonnes of marble produced in Turkey. 820,000 tonnes of this amount were exported. It is necessary that the marble production and export firms must be given necessary provisions and concessions for the development of the marble sector in the country. Türkiye 5,2 milyar m³ (13,9 milyar ton) toplam rezervi ile dünya mermer potansiyelinin yaklaşık %40\'ına sahiptir. Ancak bu potansiyelin sadece %1\'lik bir kısmı kullanılmaktadır. Mermer üretimimiz özellikle 1980\'li yıllardan itibaren hızla artmıştır. Türkiye, mermer üretiminde dünyada 7. sırada, mermer ihracatında ise 8. sırada yer almaktadır. Mermercilik sektöründe 116\'sı kamu ve 447\'si özel olmak üzere toplam 563 işletme bulunmaktadır. Bu işletmelerde çalışan toplam 5968 kişinin 1021\'i kamuya, 4947\'si de özel sektöre ait iş yerlerinde çalışmaktadırlar. 2002 yılında Türkiye 3.105.000 ton mermer üretmiş ve bunun 820.000 tonunu ihraç etmiştir.
