Carian ś(j)as and σοῦα(ν)

Year 2023, Volume: 25, 1 - 7, 16.05.2023
https://doi.org/10.37095/gephyra.1202238

Abstract

The similarity of two terms of Carian funerary terminology, ś(j)as ‘funerary monument’ (attested in Carian inscriptions) and σοῦα(ν) ‘tomb’ (preserved by Stephan of Byzantium) was recognized long ago, but their connection, if it exists at all, is unclear. This paper argues that both forms go back to the same underlying word by regular phonological and morphological processes.

Abstract

Karya mezar terminolojisinin iki terimi olan ś(j)as ‘mezar anıtı’ (Karya yazıtlarında görülür) ve σοῦα(ν) 'mezar' (Bizanslı Stephan tarafından korunmuştur) arasındaki benzerlik uzun zaman önce fark edilmiştir, ancak aralarındaki bağlantı, eğer varsa, belirsizdir. Bu makale, her iki formun da düzenli fonolojik ve morfolojik süreçlerle aynı temel kelimeye geri döndüğünü savunmaktadır.
