Relation of Low Walking Speed with Mini Nutritional Assessment in Elderly Patients

Year 2019, Volume: 2 Issue: 3, 73 - 77, 31.12.2019

Abstract

Aim:
Slow walking speed is one of the most important parameters in determining
quality of life in elderly patients. It is the result of the interaction and
adaptation of many processes including walking, attention, planning, memory,
executive functions and musculoskeletal system. There are many factors that
affect walking speed. Nutritional status is one of them. The aim of this study
was to evaluate the relationship between low walking speed and nutritional
status.

Material and Methods:
311 patients aged 60 years and over included to the study. Charlson comorbid
index, MNA score, laboratory values and demographic characteristics of the
patients were analyzed. Walking speed was evaluated with a 4-meter walking
test.

Results:
71.4% of the patients were female and the mean age was 75.37 ± 7.58. The number
of patients with low walking speed was 129 (41%). Nutritional status was
examined by mini nutritional assessment (MNA). MNA score was found to be low in
patients with slow walking speed (p < ,001).

Conclusions:
It is known that there are many factors affecting walking speed. Therefore,
comprehensive geriatric assessment should be performed carefully in each
patient. It is especially important to evaluate the nutritional status of
patients.

Yaşlılarda Düşük Yürüme Hızının Mini Nutrisyonel Değerlendirme ile İlişkisi

Year 2019, Volume: 2 Issue: 3, 73 - 77, 31.12.2019

Abstract

Amaç: Düşük
yürüme hızı, ileri yaş hastalarda yaşam kalitesini belirlemede en önemli
değerlendirme parametrelerinden biridir. Yürüme; dikkat, planlama, bellek,
yürütücü fonksiyonlar, kas iskelet sistemi dahil birçok sürecin etkileşimi ve
uyumu sonucu ortaya çıkmaktadır. Yürüme hızını etkileyen birçok faktör vardır.
Nutrisyonel durum da bunlardan bir tanesidir. Bu çalışmanın amacı düşük yürüme
hızı ile nutrisyonel durum arasındaki ilişkiyi değerlendirmektir.

Gereç ve Yöntemler: Çalışmaya 60 yaş ve üzeri 311 hasta alındı. Hastaların komorbidite indeksi,
Mini Nutrisyonel Değerlendirme (MNA) puanlaması, laboratuvar değerleri,
demografik özellikleri incelendi. Yürüme hızları 4 metre yürüme testi ile
değerlendirildi.

Bulgular: Çalışmaya alınan hastaların%71,4’ü kadın ve ortalama yaş 75,37±7,58 idi. Düşük
yürüme hızına sahip hasta sayısı 129 (%41) idi. Nutrisyon durumları MNA ile
incelendi. Yavaş yürüme hızı olanlarda MNA skorunun da düşük olduğu saptandı (
p <,001).

Sonuç: Yürüme hızını etkileyen birçok faktör olduğu
bilinmektedir. Bu yüzden her hastada ayrıntılı geriatrik değerlendirme titizlikle
uygulanmalıdır. Özellikle hastaların nutrisyonel durumunun değerlendirilmesi
önemlidir.
