The essential oil yield of Satureja hortensis (cultured and wild growing) and S. spicigera (wild) were respectively found to be 2.89%, 2.71% and 21.15%, in dry matter. The essential oils were analyzed by GLC. Respectively 18, 14 and 14 components were identified, the main ones being thymol, carvacrol, g-terpinene and p-cymene. Thymol was found to be the major component in wild S. hortensis (49.71%) and S. spicigera (30.26%), while in cultured S. hortensis it was 6.58%. The percentage of carvacrol was 30.56%, 8.31% and 8.04%. The other important constituents were g-terpinene (26.14%, 13.28%, 27.90%) and p-cymene (5.06%, 14.94%, 15.76%). The difference among cultured and wild growing S. hortensis essential oil compositions was interesting.
