Descriptive analysis of findings related to the family experiences of individuals with autism

Abstract

This study aims to identify the issues faced by families of children with autism spectrum disorder in education and daily life, and to suggest ways to address these issues. The research findings were analyzed using descriptive content analysis, focusing on qualitative research conducted with children with ASD and their families. Within this scope, 21 postgraduate theses identified from the National Thesis Centre of the Council of Higher Education that met the specified criteria were included in the analysis. The theses were examined in terms of descriptive data, including the research method, design, data collection tool, type of analysis, characteristics of the participants, the university, and the year. Then, the results obtained were analyzed thematically. The analysis identified five main themes: 'Family participation', 'challenges of autism', 'initial recognition of ASD', 'support process', and 'parents' positive views'. The findings revealed that families attempted to participate in the educational process but encountered limitations regarding cooperation and support services. This study highlights the need for future qualitative research involving fathers and other family members of individuals with ASD, as well as doctoral-level research.
