The Effects of Activities Based On Drama on Eighth Grade Students’ Achievement and Retention Level towards Cell Division
Abstract
This
study indented to investigate the effects of activities based on drama on
seventh grade students’ achievement, attitudes and retention (remembering)
levels of the students during the course of cell division. The study was
conducted in 8th grades of 100.Yıl Yatılı Bölge primary school, in country of
Susuz, Kars in spring term of 2006-2007 academic years. Experimental design
with experimental and control group model was applied in this research. In
total, 50 students from the experimental group (N=25) and control group (N=25)
participated to the study. In this study, Science Achievement Test was
developed to evaluate students’ achievement on cell division topics and drama
activities about cell division were prepared. In addition, Science Attitude
Scale was administered to explore students’ attitude towards Science topics,
and to check the effects of drama method whether topics are acquired
remembering or not as data of study taken into account, a great deal
differences between experiment and control group are clearly seen. However,
compared with curriculum methods dramatization has no permanent effect. This
result is clearly seen at the end of this study. Moreover, drama method at the
steps of knowledge, synthesis, practice, analysis, comprehension, and
evaluation result in high success within experiment group. However, for
permanency knowledge, synthesis and comprehension steps have a little positive
effect. Yet at the other steps did not have noteworthy effect. As a result of
this study, it is emphasized that in science lesson drama method can be used
easily within appropriate subjects.
