The Place of Socialization in the Sense of School Belonging and its Reflection on the Physical Environment: The Example of School Circulation Areas
Abstract
The sense of school belonging, defined as students' acceptance of themselves as a member of their school, affects academic motivation, social-emotional and physical health, behavior, and even future life. Although much research investigates the sense of school belonging in the literature, studies in the context of the physical environment are insufficient in architectural areas. In this context, the study aims to question the deficiencies and possible potentials of school circulation areas in the context of socialization, which provides the settlement of the sense of school belonging based on the interaction of socialization behavior with the physical environment. 8th-grade students in three schools in Trabzon are the participants of the study. The study consists of observing the socialization behaviors of users in circulation areas and applying the questionnaire form. As a result of the study, the traditionally designed circulation areas, benefiting from natural lighting, meeting thermal comfort, and having some equipment even though they are insufficient in terms of number and quality, enable students to use these spaces for socialization purposes. But those are insufficient for qualified socialization. While designing circulation areas, designers must consider the factors such as function, organization, access, flexibility, form, aesthetics, size, lighting, physical comfort, universal design, security, and perception. The organization of activity and action areas (such as sitting, working, exhibiting, and playing) and taking into account the demands/needs of the users will acquire and develop socialization behavior. So this situation may contribute to gaining a sense of school belonging.
