Analyzing digital media designs in public spaces through the concepts of “time” and “space”
Abstract
Architecture, which has evolved with the spirit of the times from the past to the present, continues to be influenced by the characteristics of the 21st century. Digital media designs, which alter the way we experience the concepts of space and time, are frequently implemented in urban public spaces. Media designs also bring to the fore the formation of new forms of urban identity and memory in public spaces and cities. Digital designs integrated into public spaces exist in a time-like form with their flexible spatial approaches, as opposed to the timeless form of static structures experienced in traditional cities. The concept of time-like architecture treats architecture not as a static entity, but as an organism that changes, transforms, and responds to changes over time. This study analyzes the transformation of digital media designs. A conceptual framework was developed using Senagala's (2002) concept of “time-like architecture.” The concepts of change, transience, and difference used in the study were conceptualized by the authors, inspired by Senagala's approach. Examples selected from different geographical locations were analyzed within the framework of these conceptual characteristics. During the study process, videos and online materials related to media designs were examined, and the designs were experienced in a virtual environment. These experiences supported the analysis process and contributed to the methodology. This study reveals the positive effects of time-like architectures that have found their place in public space on cities and city dwellers in the near and distant future, while also critically evaluating their negative aspects.
