Evaluation of the İskenderun People’s House Building in the context of continuity and change

Abstract

During the construction of national identity in early Republican Turkey, many cities built people's houses to facilitate social, cultural, and educational activities. The İskenderun People's House Building is a historical building designed/constructed in 1939-40 with the “people's house function” and continued to be used until today with its formal education function since the 1950s. Located on Atatürk Boulevard, an important axis of the coastal city of İskenderun, the building has undergone a series of alterations in its functional, spatial, and visual aspects throughout its historical existence. This study evaluates the architectural and functional transformations of the İskenderun People’s House Building in the context of continuity and change. The methodology of the study is based on written, drawn, and visual documents obtained through literature and archival research, as well as on-site observations and findings. Consequently, interventions on the historical building's transformation process focused on four distinct periods. Despite the negative effects of the interventions, it can be said that the continuity of the building in terms of functional, spatial, and visual aspects within the framework of contemporary conservation approaches can only be possible with a sustainable and manageable change.
