XVI. YÜZYILIN İKİNCİ YARISINDA GENÇLERİN GELECEK KAYGISI BAĞLAMINDA EŞKIYALIK
Abstract

BANDITRY IN THE CONTEXT OF YOUNG PEOPLE'S ANXIETY ABOUT THE FUTURE IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE 16TH CENTURY
Abstract
The research examines the banditry movements that spread throughout Ottoman Anatolia in the second half of the 16th century within the framework of the anxiety about the future experienced by the young population. The main objective of the research is to reveal that banditry activities cannot be explained solely by the breakdown of public order, individual criminal tendencies, or administrative inadequacies, but that the failure to meet the economic and social expectations of young people played a significant role in this process. Rapid population growth in the 16th century, increasing pressure on agricultural production, and limited employment opportunities in cities created serious problems, especially for the young population. The narrowing of livelihood opportunities in villages and limited job prospects in cities left young people facing an uncertain future. A similar situation existed for young people who hoped to advance through madrasa education. Despite the increasing number of students, the lack of opportunities for academic careers and entry into government service left many madrasa students unemployed and insecure. The primary sources for this research are Ottoman archival documents, particularly the Mühimme Defterleri. Banditry incidents recorded in these documents were examined, taking into account the social status of the perpetrators and the forms of state intervention. The data obtained was evaluated in comparison with secondary literature. The study revealed that young people played a significant role among the groups involved in banditry activities. Madrasa students, unemployed young men, and young people who lost their livelihoods after military service played a prominent role in the spread of banditry. This situation shows that banditry was closely related to young people's search for livelihood and survival.
