Electrical Resistivity Survey and Archaeological Evaluation of Subterranean Structures South of the Savatra Theatre

Abstract

Archaeological research conducted at the ancient city of Savatra has focused in recent years on identifying buried architectural remains without disrupting the integrity of the archaeological site. In this context, electrical resistivity measurements were carried out in 2024 in the southern part of the Savatra theater to investigate possible underground structures, voids, passages, and buried archaeological spaces. Electrical resistivity data were obtained across nine different measurement profiles using Wenner-Alpha, Wenner-Beta, and Wenner-Gamma electrode arrays. The measurement results revealed significant anomalies, particularly in profiles P2, P3, and P8, suggesting that these anomalies may be related to possible underground voids located approximately 2–4 m below the surface. Targeted archaeological excavations (01KM24 and 02KM24) conducted in line with these anomalies resulted in the discovery of two underground structures containing ceramic fragments, spindle whorls, terracotta weaving weights, and human and animal remains. Archaeological excavation results have revealed a strong correlation between identified resistivity anomalies and buried subsurface structures. This study demonstrates that the combined evaluation of electrical resistivity data and archaeological findings can make significant contributions to the identification of buried archaeological sites, the development of targeted excavation plans, and the non-destructive investigation of archaeological areas in Savatra.
