Water Resources and Present Status of Aquaculture Sector in Gümüşhane
Abstract
Gümüşhane, located in the Region of East Black Sea of Turkey, has big potential for the aquaculture production due to its number of rivers, lakes and dams. In Gümüşhane province water surface area of the dams and ponds are 745,3 hectare. In Gümüşhane fish farms, only rainbow trout are being produced. The trout production in Gümüşhane was 15 tons in 1994 and then rapidly increased every year till 2009 accordingly: 50 tons in 1996, 120 tons in 1997, 300 tons in 1999, 552 tons in 2006, 1,837 tons in 2008, 1898 tons in 2009. After 2009, trout production started to decrease respectively to 1,674 tons in 2010, 1,683 tons in 2011 and 1,450 tons in 2012. According to the production values of 2013 which has not been included the official statistics, in 40 trout farm in the province, the trout production was 3,125 tons and fry trout number was 4.350.000. The main factor of the increase in trout production is the new production plants in net cages built in dam lakes. With the start of fishing in dams under construction and newly completed ones at the other sites of the province, the production will increase more and more. The main fish species caught in Gümüşhane rivers and lakes are carp (Cyprinus carpio) and brown trout (Salmo trutta).
