The aim of this study was to determine the factors affecting communication skills in intesive care nurses. The study was was conducted with a qualitative research method between December 2015 – March 2016 in the cardiovascular intensive care unit of aprivate hospital in Ankara. The sample included nurses that agreed to be included to the study (n=9) and suitable to the inclusion criteria. The data obtained from the in-depth interviews were evaluated using the phenomenological data analysis method. The data obtained from all women subjects (n=9), 4 married, 5 single, with 5 to 22 years of experience in intensive care nursing were found to be related to three main subjects; emotion recognition and understanding, detecting behaviour and cooperation. Knowing the patient through emotion and behaviour has been evaluated as a success by the intensive care nurses. In this regard, education of awareness should be implemented for intensive care nurses.
