INVESTIGATION OF OCCUPATIONAL ACCIDENTS IN HOSPITALS: CASE OF A STATE HOSPITAL

Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine frequency of occupational accidents among health workers in a non-teaching state hospital in Türkiye, and to analyze occupational accident rate according to gender, profession, ward, accident type, and occurrence time of accident. Notification forms for occupational accidents in 2018 and 2019 were examined. The occupational accident frequency rate was 222.27 and 193.81 for male and female employees subsequently. It was found that 65.1% of those who had an occupational accident were nurses. Moreover, 41.3% of those experienced an accident in the intensive care unit, emergency service, and operating room. Sharp injuries came first, followed by violence, musculoskeletal injuries, and contamination with blood and body fluids. Surprisingly, 44% of occupational accidents emerged between 08:01-12:00 hours, followed by 31.7% between 12:01-16.00 hours. Analyzing occupational accidents can be the first step to understanding root causes, building a strong safety culture, and improving safety performance in a hospital organization. In this context, recommendations to practitioners, decision-makers, and researchers were developed.

HASTANELERDE MEYDANA GELEN İŞ KAZALARININ İNCELENMESİ: BİR DEVLET HASTANESİ ÖRNEĞİ

Abstract

Bu çalışmanın amacı, Türkiye’de bir devlet hastanesinde sağlık çalışanlarının iş kazası geçirme sıklığının belirlenmesi ve maruz kalınan iş kazalarının cinsiyete, unvana, çalışılan birime, kaza türüne ve kazanın gerçekleşme saatine göre değişiminin analiz edilmesidir. Araştırmada bir devlet hastanesinde 2018 ve 2019 yıllarında gerçekleşen iş kazalarına ait kaza bildirim formları incelenmiştir. İş kazası geçiren erkek çalışanların iş kazası sıklık oranı 222,27 ve kadınların iş kazası sıklık oranı 193,81 olarak hesaplanmıştır. İş kazası sıklığının unvana göre değişimi incelendiğinde, iş kazası geçirenlerin %65,1’inin hemşirelerden oluştuğu bulunmuştur. İş kazası geçirenlerin %41,3’ü yoğun bakım, acil servis ve ameliyathane gibi riskli birimlerde iş kazasına maruz kalmışlardır. İş kazası türleri sıralandığında ilk sırada delici ve kesici alet yaralanmaları gelmekte; bunu şiddet, kas-iskelet yaralanmaları ile kan ve vücut sıvılarına temas etme izlemektedir. İş kazalarının %44’ü 08:01-12:00 saatleri arasında; %31,7’si ise 12:01-16:00 saatleri arasında gerçekleşmiştir. Hastanelerde iş kazalarının analiz edilmesi kök nedenleri anlamak, güçlü bir güvenlik kültürü yerleştirmek ve güvenlik performansını geliştirmek için ilk adım olabilir. Bu bağlamda uygulayıcılara, karar vericilere ve araştırmacılara yönelik öneriler geliştirilmiştir.
