Abdurrahman b. Abu Bakr was the son of Abu Bakr who was the best companion of the Prophet, his father-in-law and one of the first Muslims. Abdurrahman, also known as the eldest son of the Abu Bakr family, was born in Mecca and had a good family education because he grew up in an honorable family in the Quraysh. When religion of Islam began to spread, Abdurrahman kept his ancestor’s religion and did not change his faith until the end of Mecca period. During the early days of Medinah, he continued to be with the polytheists and joined the Badr War with them. Abdurrahman, who challenged Islam for a long time, became a Muslim after the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah. Although he became a Muslim late, he managed to draw attention with his actions. Particularly in the period of Hulefâ-i Rashidin (Four Caliphates) and Umayyads, he gained a historical identity by taking part in important issues. In fact, since he became a Muslim long after he was on the side of polytheists; and took part in political issues as being an individual of Abu Bakr’s family, he had a multifaceted personality. Therefore, examining his life will provide a better understanding of the background of some events.
