Investigation of Awareness of Pediatric Nurses Regarding the Determination of Dry Powder Displacement Volumes of Powder Medicines in Vial Form

Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to examine pediatric nurses' awareness regarding the determination of dry powder volumes of vial-containing powdered medications. Methods: The study was conducted between June-July 2021 with 162 nurses working at a Training and Research Hospital in western Turkey. Data were collected using a questionnaire that included the nurses' personal characteristics, the most frequently used vials of medication, and dry powder volume calculations. Data were analyzed using SPSS 24 software package with descriptive statistics (number, percentage, mean, standard deviation, chi-square test). Findings were considered statistically significant at a 95% confidence interval, p<0.05. Results: The average age of the nurses was 29.91±6.81, 87% were female, the average years of experience was 7.36±6.63, 58.6% had worked in pediatrics for 1-5 years, 88.9% were clinical nurses, 77.2% worked day/on-call shifts, and 77.2% had received training in drug dosage calculation. 77.3% considered the dry powder volume important when diluting medications. However, it was found that more than half of the nurses did not know the correct difference in dry powder volume. Conclusion: It can be said that nurses are aware of calculating the dry powder volume of drugs, but they need to be supported in being informed about this issue.
